Mid back pain, like other back pains can result from a number of causes. The most common cause for all back pains, including mid back pain is overexertion, tiredness, fatigue and stress. These are the simple causes and can be quickly alleviated by relaxing stretches, rest and relaxation, soothing back rubs and massages and also by taking pain medication.

Another cause of back pain, including pain in the middle back arises from sedentary lifestyles. In the age of technology, and especially for those who spend long hours seated at workstations, it has been found that the amount of required movement to maintain back health just does not happen. Such people will be more prone to back pain of all kinds. For sedentary office workers, it is important to have a regular workout routine that includes back exercises, balance and aerobic exercises. This will help them maintain a healthy back and will ensure over all well-being.

Sports persons tend to develop back problems due to over indulging in sports activities that hasten the wear and tear to the back. Sportsmen also fall victim to sports injuries which can cause lifelong back pain.

However, middle back pain can also result from conditions other then the simply identifiable ones discussed above. There have been cases where there have been no reported cases of injuries or trauma, but the patient experiences severe pain in the area between the shoulder blades. The pain is especially severe when the sufferer moves in certain ways or tries to twist in certain directions that are considered quite normal. In such cases, when examinations are conducted, it is revealed that the middle back pain is due to a misalignment in the lower back area. Since the spine operates as a unit, it is not unusual for a lower back problem to manifest as mid back pain. Similarly, a misalignment in the base of the neck could also cause middle back pain. Mid back pain in such cases is relieved with chiropractic manipulation.

Intercostal pain in the middle back results from injury or trauma to the ribs. Even if the ribs are hurt in the front, the pain may manifest as mid back pain because the ribcage and its muscular system continues back and front of the thoriac cavity.

Neuro-muscularskeletal problems also cause intercostals pain in the middle back region. This condition is known as intercostal neuralgia and is not easily treated with pain medication. Intercostal neuralgia is the result of inflammation to one or more of the nerves in the thoriac region. The condition can be treated with gentle adjustments to the ribs and spine. Doctors may prescribe cold packs to reduce the inflammatory swelling and oral medication to help the inflammation to subside may have to be taken.
