Weak backs are not the only cause of back pain lower or pain in the lower back. Back pain can also develop from a number of other conditions. These conditions range from the simple overexertion and tiredness to the complex ones like spinal disc ailments that may make it necessary to for the patient to undergo surgery.

The back bone or spine is made up of smaller bones joined together called the vertebrae. Between the joints of the vertebrae are small structures called discs. These discs contain a jelly like substance that cushion the vertebrae from rubbing against each other and causing friction. In addition, the discs act as shock absorbers in jolts like accidents and injuries, thus preventing damage to the vertebrae and ensuring that these joints remain correctly aligned and in place. However, the discs are not immune and become injured or develop ailments. Back pain that results from disc ailments and injury is extremely painful and uncomfortable to bear.

One kind of disc ailment occurs due to herniation of one or more discs. Normal wear and tear, strenuous activity, undetected back injuries resulting from sports or accidents, may cause the walls of the disc to weaken. The weakening of the disc wall will result in it becoming misshapen by bulging. The bulging may press on a nearby nerve, thus causing excruciating pain. This is back pain due to a herniated disc.

The herniated disc may also begin to leak and the fluid loss in the disc will result in the lessening of the gap between two vertebrae. In such cases too, the sufferer will experience severe pain of the kind called back pain lower.

Herniated discs that have lost the jelly cannot hold the vertebrae in place. As a result, the disc and a vertebra may both become misaligned. This condition is known as slipped disc. Slipped disc will often result in a nerve getting pinched between the misalignment and cause sciatic pain.

Lower back pain resulting from sciatica starts in the lower lumbar region and radiates through the buttock down the front, back or side of the thigh. It may continue behind the knee all the way down into the foot making it difficult for the patient to stand and walk. Sciatic pain will generally be accompanied by tingling, numbness and weakness. If the condition does not improve, doctors recommend surgery to get the pressure off the nerve. In case the pressure on the nerve continues, it could lead to permanent impairment and immobility.

Pain in and around the hip joints is described as hip pain. Hip pain may occur due to injury or pain in the lower back. Hip pain sometimes manifests as pain in the thigh or groin.

Two major factors for hip pain are fractures of the hip bone or joint or then insufficient flow of blood to the hip area. Hip fractures affect the quality of life of the patient, and a large number are unable to return to normal pace of activities before the fracture.

Hip fractures require hip surgery, and the recovery process is not free of threats. Immobility may result in blood clots that could travel to the lungs or other parts if undetected and untreated. Pneumonia is a commonly occurring condition following surgery after hip fracture. Hip fractures are medical emergencies and need to be attended to immediately. Recovery involves physical therapy and exercises done under the guidance of a professional therapist. If physical therapy is not taken seriously it may result in immobility.

Insufficient blood supply to the hip are is known as aseptic necrosis. A common cause for this condition is sickle cell anemia. However, alcohol consumption and injuries may also affect the blood supply to the hip.

Legg-Carve-Perthes is a hip degeneration condition that occurs in children. Boys between the ages of 4-10 are more likely victims. Symptoms include painless limping, knee pain, shortening of the leg, persistent thigh and groin pain and a host of others. It is important to maintain hip mobility and the doctor may use bracing to contain the movement of the thigh ball in order to ensure it remains located in the socket. In some cases surgery may be a better option.

Hip pain can also be caused by arthritis. Resulting pain will also be felt in the thigh or groin area. Brusitis is another condition causing hip pain. Sufferers experience pain when they get up from the chair, walk, and climb stairs drive and so on. Hip pain from Tendinitis is caused due to repetitive activity or even strenuous activity. Low back ailments such as sciatica may also cause hip pain.

First line of treatment for hip pain, as in other pains, is to avoid activities that aggravate the pain. Precaution must be taken to sleep on the non-painful side and pain medication may be needed to alleviate the pain. However, if the hip pain does not improve, medical advice must be sought. Hip exercises may be suggested by the doctor along with other diagnostic tests and manipulations.
